The Reginald A. Fessenden Centennial Celebration

Friday, August 4, 2006 through Sunday, August 6, 2006

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

As readers of the Mariner are aware, Marshfield recently commenced the celebration of our unique status as the “Birthplace of Broadcasting”, an honor due to the work of a Professor Reginald Fessenden, who produced the first radio broadcast for entertainment in our own Brant Rock in 1906. Our weekend-long celebration was a tremendous success, with over 1,200 participants coming to the Daniel Webster Estate and/or the Winslow House for events ranging from music and historical tours, live broadcasts of “Radio Pioneers”, a Gala Dinner and an Award of the First Fessenden Award to Gary LaPierre of WBZ Radio, and the Chamber of Commerce Chowda Fest on Sunday.

Making this event a success was a spirited group of Committee Members and Volunteers whom we will recognize in a future edition of the Mariner, as we have several additional events to commemorate Marshfield’s special heritage, to take place later this Fall!

With this letter we wish to recognize the many generous businesses throughout Marshfield, the South Shore, and Massachusetts, who helped to make our events successful.

We wish to begin by recognizing Tivoli Radio as our main corporate sponsor, and Ed Perry & WATD Radio in particular for the inspiration and financial support that made the weekend a tremendous success. Edison Beer and Blanchard’s Liquors were kind in donating the spirits for the Gala, and Taylor Lumber were exceptional in assisting us with set up for the event. The Mariner Newspapers donated advertising space for the event and were very generous in providing news coverage both before and after the main events.

Eileen Byrne of Buckles and Boards and Phyllis Nielsen, our Co-Chairs for the Silent Auction of the Fessenden Gala, note that we were fortunate to have the incredible support of the following businesses and individuals, each who donated a silent auction item to help raise funds for the restoration and maintenance of the Daniel Webster Estate:
